What is Traffolyte?

Traffolyte is a multi-layered phenolic laminate (HPL) with contrasting coloured layers that are revealed through mechanical engraving. Originally developed in 1927 at Trafford Park, Manchester, the name has since become a generic industry term for engraved phenolic labels used across electrical, mechanical, and industrial applications. The spelling "traffolite" is also commonly used and refers to the same material.

What makes traffolyte the go-to material for control panel labelling and switchboard identification is its non-conductive properties, making it inherently safe for electrical installations. It is heat resistant, chemical resistant, UV stable, and low smoke halogen free, conforming to EN438 and ISO 4586. Available in 1.5mm and 3mm thicknesses, traffolyte plastic offers exceptional durability even in the most demanding environments.

Whether you are specifying traffolyte labels for a new switchboard build, replacing worn identification on existing control panels, or need traffolyte engraving for valve tags and rating plates, this material delivers permanent, professional results that meet the standards your projects demand.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Traffolyte is made from phenolic laminate (HPL), a multi-layered plastic material where contrasting coloured layers are bonded together under high pressure. When the top layer is mechanically engraved, the second colour is revealed, creating permanent, high-contrast text and symbols. The material conforms to EN438 and ISO 4586 standards.
Yes. Traffolyte is UV stable, chemical resistant, and heat resistant, making it suitable for outdoor installations. The engraved text will not fade, peel, or degrade over time. For extreme marine or offshore conditions, stainless steel or anodised aluminium may be more appropriate. We can advise on the best material for your specific environment.
We offer over 100 colour combinations as standard, including popular options like Black on Yellow, White on Red, White on Blue, and Black on White. Metallic finishes such as silver, gold, brass, and copper are also available for nameplates and decorative applications. If you need a specific combination, contact us and we can source it.
Yes, we can match existing traffolyte labels for colour, size, font, and layout. Send us a photo or sample of the label you need to replicate, and our team will produce an exact match. This is common for maintenance and retrofit projects where consistency is essential.
There is no minimum order quantity. We produce everything from a single label to runs of 10,000+ with equal care and attention. Every order is bespoke, engraved in-house at our Hertfordshire facility.
Standard turnaround is typically 3 to 5 working days from proof approval. Urgent orders can often be accommodated. Contact us with your deadline and we will do our best to meet it.
Yes. We produce traffolyte valve tags in any shape and size, with chain holes, cable tie slots, or pre-drilled screw fixings. Available in 1.5mm and 3mm thicknesses with your choice of colour coding and text.
There is no difference. "Traffolyte" and "traffolite" are simply alternate spellings of the same material. Both refer to the multi-layered phenolic laminate used for engraved labels and signs. The name originates from Trafford Park in Manchester, where the material was first manufactured in 1927. You may see both spellings used across the industry.
