Silver Fox® Partners with UH Racing Formula Student Team

Formula Student, organised by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), is Europe's most respected engineering competition for students. It challenges teams to design, build, and race a single-seat formula-style car, giving students vital experience in design, teamwork, and project management.

The competition takes place each summer at Silverstone, with over 100 university teams from more than 30 countries competing across multiple categories including combustion, electric, hybrid, and autonomous vehicles.

As Dr Howard Ash, Head of the Automotive Group at the University of Hertfordshire, explains: "We aren't teaching the next Lewis Hamilton - we're creating the engineers that make his car." This practical, hands-on learning is precisely what makes Formula Student such a valuable experience for students entering the engineering profession.

UH Racing is one of the most innovative UK Formula Student teams. Founded in 1997, they have competed in every IMechE Formula Student event since its inception in 1998. The team has a strong reputation within the competition, known for their creativity, discipline, and technical ability.

Throughout their history, UH Racing has entered competitions worldwide with cutting-edge petrol, electric, and hydrogen-powered cars. They were the first UK team to compete with an electric vehicle back in 2009, demonstrating the forward-thinking approach that continues to define the team today.

The 2024-25 Formula Student season marked a significant chapter in UH Racing's story. A team of 22 engineering students built UH28, an all-wheel-drive electric vehicle concept that stands as UH Racing's most advanced EV to date.

At Formula Student UK 2025, the team successfully earned Safety, Tech, and Chassis scrutineering stickers and achieved a major milestone: the first EV Battery sticker in 15 years. While PCB issues prevented further progress in the dynamic events, 2025 marked the furthest UH Racing have made it through scrutineering since 2019.

The car features an innovative decoupled roll and heave suspension at the front with conventional pushrod at the rear, pushed to its limits through physical testing both on track and with team partner Multimatic using their four-post test rig. This testing gave the team and drivers confidence that their electric concept will be tough to beat in the coming years.

Formula Student cars contain hundreds of connections that require clear identification for safety scrutineering, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
